Cookies Policy

What is a cookie?

Cookies are small text files which are downloaded to and stored on your device when you visit a website.

Why do you use cookies?

We use cookies to ensure our website works efficiently, to collect anonymous data to allow us to improve how our site works and to provide our supporters with adverts we feel they may be interested in.

Some examples of this are below:

  • To enable you to make donations through our website

  • To remember accessibility preferences of visitors to our website

  • To monitor how visitors interact with our website and to improve it for others

  • To engage recent visitors to our website - by using carefully-selected third party suppliers, such as Google, recent visitors can see Build Africa adverts on other websites they visit.

What types of cookies do you use?

There are four categories of cookie, as set out below. The majority of our cookies are for Categories 1 and 2, but we do also use cookies for Categories 3 and 4.

Category 1: strictly necessary cookies. These cookies are essential in order to enable you to move around the website and use its features, such as accessing secure areas of the website.

Category 2: performance cookies. These cookies collect information about how visitors use our website, for instance which pages visitors go to most often, and if they get error messages from web pages. All of this data is aggregated and just used for us to improve our website.

Category 3: functionality cookies. These cookies collect information about how visitors use a website and their preferences. For example their language preferences and any accessibility settings.

Category 4: targeting or advertising cookies. These cookies allow us to understand our site visitor’s interests and then reach them with advertising on our own, or other websites (like Google and Facebook) which we feel would be of interest.

Do you use third party services or suppliers to analyse website use?

Like many organisations, we use Google Analytics (which uses cookies) to analyse website behavior, improve our website for visitors and to track the effectiveness of our fundraising campaigns. The information generated by the cookie (including your IP address) will be transmitted to and stored by Google on servers in the United States. Google will not associate your IP address with any other data held by Google. Google do have an opt-out browser add-on if you would like to opt out of this.

Do you collect personally identifiable information for any of these activities?

No. None of the data we collect is personally identifiable.

Controlling the use of cookies.

All internet browsers, like Internet Explorer and Google Chrome, allow you to change your cookies settings. This is usually done via the ‘options’ or ‘preferences’ settings. Back Home
